BEML Unveils India's First Indigenous 60-Ton Electric Dump Truck

By AUTOASTRA Editorial · 1 Oct 2026 · Electric

BEML has unveiled the BH60-EV, India's first indigenously developed 60-ton electric dump truck, with a 1,000 kWh battery and 40-60% lower operating costs than diesel.

Heavy Industry Meets Electrification at the Very Top

BEML Limited has unveiled the BH60-EV, describing it as India's first indigenously designed and developed 60-ton electric dump truck, at its Mysuru complex. The vehicle was launched virtually by BEML Chairman and Managing Director Shantanu Roy. It follows the company's 35-ton electric dump truck, unveiled on 10 April 2026, and targets the mining and infrastructure sectors, where diesel running costs and emissions are both heavy burdens.

The BH60-EV is powered by a permanent magnet synchronous motor paired with a rugged gearbox and a 1,000 kWh high-voltage lithium-ion battery pack. It carries a payload of 54,500 kg with a rock body and offers a volumetric body capacity of 36.4 cubic metres. BEML says the electric platform can cut operating costs by 40 to 60 per cent compared with conventional diesel equipment, and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by about 130 tonnes per vehicle per year, depending on operating conditions.

Why Off-Highway Electrification Is Different

Electric heavy equipment sidesteps the charging-infrastructure problem that slows on-road electric trucks, because mining and construction sites can install dedicated charging stations inside their own fences. BEML offers a charging solution compatible with site electrical infrastructure and scalable for fleet operations. The cabin includes a roll-over protective structure, emergency steering and sealed oil-cooled disc brakes.

The move sits alongside wider momentum in India's commercial EV space, from Tata Motors' electric last-mile range to Ashok Leyland's zero-emission truck push, trends we track under AUTOINDIA's electric coverage.

What This Means for You

This is not a consumer product, but it matters to anyone who follows India's energy and manufacturing story. Off-highway electrification is where battery economics work hardest today, and every heavy-duty platform that proves the case pushes component costs down for the cars and two-wheelers you and I buy.
