Honda has confirmed its first India electric car will launch before the end of this financial year, based on the 0 Alpha SUV concept and expected to cost Rs 18-24 lakh.
Honda has been the quiet one in India's electric race, watching Tata, Mahindra, MG and now VinFast build a market while it sold petrol and hybrid cars. That patience now has an end date. At the launch of the new Elevate facelift, Honda Cars India officials confirmed that the brand's first electric model here will go on sale before the end of this financial year.
The car will be an all-new electric SUV based on Honda's 0 Alpha concept, built on a dedicated skateboard electric platform rather than a converted petrol model. It is expected to reach showrooms in the first quarter of 2027, between January and March, and is being positioned in the heart of India's fastest-growing electric segment.
Honda will manufacture the SUV at its Tapukara facility in Rajasthan, and the plant is being lined up to serve export markets such as Japan as well. That dual role matters, because it gives Honda the volume to localise aggressively. The company is expected to price the car between Rs 18 lakh and Rs 24 lakh ex-showroom, which puts it directly against the Maruti Suzuki e Vitara, the Hyundai Creta Electric and the Tata Sierra EV.
Expected hardware includes a battery in the 60-75kWh range, a real-world range of roughly 400-500km, ultra-fast charging and a Level 2 ADAS suite. Honda says the SUV is undergoing road testing across India, checking battery management and cabin cooling in extreme heat and suspension tuning for varied terrain.
| Parameter | Expected (Honda 0 Alpha SUV) | Maruti e Vitara | Hyundai Creta Electric |
|---|---|---|---|
| Price band (ex-showroom) | Rs 18-24 lakh | From about Rs 17 lakh | From about Rs 18 lakh |
| Battery | 60-75kWh | 49-61kWh | 42-51kWh |
| Real-world range | 400-500km | About 350-450km | About 390-473km |
| Platform | Dedicated EV skateboard | Dedicated EV (eTNGA) | Converted Creta platform |
Honda has a reputation for durability and resale that has kept buyers loyal even when its cabins felt dated. If it can bring that reputation to an electric SUV priced from around Rs 18 lakh with genuine 400km-plus range, it becomes a serious alternative to the established Indian electric SUVs. The car to watch is whether the price holds near Rs 18 lakh at launch, since the segment is already crowded.
