Meghalaya Notifies EV Policy 2026 — Up to ₹2 Lakh Scrappage Incentive

By AUTOASTRA Editorial · 22 Oct 2026 · Policy

Meghalaya has notified its Electric Vehicle Policy 2026, offering purchase incentives, tax and registration exemptions and scrappage benefits up to ₹2 lakh on commercial electric four-wheelers.

Meghalaya Bets on Incentives to Grow EV Adoption

The Meghalaya government has notified its Electric Vehicle Policy 2026, replacing the state's 2021 framework with a three-year package of purchase incentives, tax and registration exemptions, and scrappage benefits. The state had about 6.53 lakh registered vehicles as of June 2026, of which only a little over 2,500 were electric, so the policy is aimed squarely at lifting a very low base.

The benefits will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis within category-wise vehicle limits, which means buyers should not assume the incentives will still be available later in the policy period. The government says the aim is to promote electric mobility across private and commercial transport, public transport, tourism and shared mobility services.

Meghalaya EV Policy 2026: Key Incentives

Eligible electric four-wheelers must be priced at or below ₹35 lakh ex-factory. Electric vehicles registered in Meghalaya during the policy period also get exemptions on motor vehicle tax and registration fees, covering qualifying private and commercial two-wheelers, three-wheelers, four-wheelers and electric buses.

Scrappage Benefits and Charging Plans

The policy adds scrappage support for buyers who replace qualifying BS-IV or older Meghalaya-registered vehicles through an authorised Registered Vehicle Scrapping Facility. Electric two-wheeler buyers can get ₹10,000, limited to the first 400 applicants; electric three-wheelers ₹25,000, limited to 50; private electric four-wheelers ₹50,000; and commercial electric four-wheelers ₹2 lakh, each capped at 300 applicants. On charging, the Transport Department will work with the Meghalaya Power Distribution Corporation and other agencies to identify sites and set up charging stations and battery-swapping facilities in phases, with government land available on lease to encourage private investment.

What This Means for You

If you live in Meghalaya and are weighing an electric vehicle, the arithmetic has improved, but the caps matter. With only 3,000 private electric four-wheelers eligible for the ₹25,000 purchase incentive and a first-come, first-served rule, waiting could cost you the benefit. The bigger prize for commercial operators is the ₹2 lakh scrappage support on an electric four-wheeler, which is large enough to change the payback on a fleet vehicle. Buyers elsewhere in India should watch whether other states follow with similar packages.
