Renault's Duster Strong Hybrid E-Tech 160 launches in India on 17 October with an ARAI-certified 29 km/litre, bringing self-charging hybrid tech to the midsize SUV fight.
Renault will launch the Duster Strong Hybrid E-Tech 160 in India on 17 October, marking the first time the company's E-Tech hybrid technology arrives here. Bookings opened on 9 October for a token amount of ₹21,000, and Renault has already announced the headline number buyers care about most: an ARAI-certified fuel efficiency of 29 km per litre.
That figure is the highest claimed efficiency in the Duster line-up and places it at the front of India's strong-hybrid SUVs. The existing turbo-petrol Duster starts at ₹10.49 lakh ex-showroom, and this electrified version will sit well above it.
| Specification | Duster Strong Hybrid E-Tech 160 |
|---|---|
| Engine | 1.8-litre four-cylinder naturally aspirated petrol |
| Electric assistance | Two electric motors and a 1.4 kWh battery |
| Combined output | 160 PS and 172 Nm |
| ARAI-certified efficiency | 29 kmpl |
| Charging | Not required, the car self-charges |
A strong hybrid is not a mild hybrid with a bigger badge. In this Duster, the petrol engine and the electric motors can drive the wheels together or separately, and the battery is topped up by the engine and by regenerative braking, so there is no cable and no charger in your life. The upside is diesel-like efficiency with petrol convenience and no range anxiety. The trade-off is that a strong hybrid carries more hardware than a plain petrol car, which is why it costs more.
Renault says this is the first E-Tech model under its futuREady roadmap for India, and it is positioning the Duster hybrid as an alternative to diesel for buyers who drive a lot. Francisco Hidalgo, Vice President of Sales and Marketing for Renault Group India, framed it as a way to avoid choosing between performance and fuel efficiency.
The Duster hybrid is expected to be priced between ₹18 lakh and ₹22 lakh ex-showroom, which puts it against the Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder and the Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara, both of which offer strong hybrids with claimed efficiency of just under 28 kmpl. Against them, the Duster's 29 kmpl is a marginal but real advantage, and it brings Renault's European hybrid experience to the table. Deliveries are expected to begin around Diwali 2026.
If you drive more than about 1,500 km a month and want low running costs without the charging question, a strong hybrid is now a genuinely strong option in India. At Delhi's 14 October rate of ₹102.12 a litre for petrol, a car returning 29 kmpl costs roughly ₹3.5 per kilometre, close to CNG territory but with none of the refuelling limits.
