India’s SUV dominance has reached a historic milestone. August 2026 sales data shows SUVs now account for over 60% of all passenger vehicles sold — a figure unimaginable just five years ago.
August 2026 passenger vehicle sales data, released this week by industry bodies, confirms what every showroom in India already knows: SUVs now account for 60.4% of all cars sold — the first time the segment has crossed the 60% threshold in Indian automotive history.
Total passenger vehicle sales in August 2026 stood at approximately 3.85 lakh units, of which SUVs contributed 2.33 lakh units. Hatchbacks continued their decline, dropping to just 16% of the market. Sedans held at a marginal 8%.
Maruti Suzuki retained the top spot overall but its SUV share (46% of its own sales) lags the market. Mahindra — an SUV-only brand — posted its best-ever August, with the Scorpio-N, XUV 3XO and Thar Roxx driving record volumes. Tata's SUV portfolio (Nexon, Punch, Curvv, Harrier, Safari) accounted for 78% of its total sales.
More competition in the SUV space means more choice and better value at every price point. But it also means hatchback buyers are being squeezed — with fewer models available and less investment flowing into the segment, entry-level car ownership is getting harder.
The trend is irreversible. Every manufacturer's product roadmap for 2027–2028 is 70%+ SUV. India has officially become an SUV nation.
