Festive car offers now reach a reported ₹1.36 lakh, but most of that headline number is conditional. Here is why the discount on paper is rarely the discount you pay.
Every festive season, the same advertisement appears: a car you were considering is suddenly "up to ₹1.36 lakh off". It is a big, attention-grabbing number, and it is technically true. The catch is that it almost never lands on your invoice in full, and understanding why will save you more money than the offer itself.
The headline figure is a bundle, not a price cut. It usually stacks a modest cash discount on top of an exchange or scrappage bonus, a loyalty benefit, an institutional offer and a booking-linked sweetener. Each component has a condition attached. The exchange bonus needs an eligible old car and the right paperwork. The loyalty benefit needs prior ownership or a qualifying upgrade. The institutional offer is limited to defined customer categories. Take away the parts you do not qualify for, and the "₹1.36 lakh" can shrink to a fraction of the number that pulled you into the showroom.
The real story is the on-road price, not the discount. Two dealers can advertise the same benefit and still quote very different totals once handling charges, accessories, extended warranty and insurance are added. A discount headline tells you nothing about the final cheque you write.
First, ask for a written, itemised breakup that separates the ex-showroom price, each benefit and every add-on. Second, check whether each benefit is tied to a booking date or a delivery date, because the difference decides whether you actually get it. Third, compare the on-road price across at least two dealers rather than comparing discount headlines. Fourth, treat any bundled freebie — accessories, warranty, a home charger — as value, not as cash, and price it accordingly.
Festive offers are real, and a genuine cash discount is worth chasing. But the number in the advertisement is a ceiling for a perfectly qualified buyer, not a promise to you. The buyer who wins the festive season is the one who negotiates on the on-road total with the breakup in hand — not the one who was impressed by the biggest number on the billboard.
