Mahindra's XUV 3XO ZNG has joined the Brezza CNG and Nexon iCNG. We compare prices, mileage, torque and boot space to find the best compact CNG SUV in India in 2026.
If you drive a lot and count every rupee, the compact CNG SUV has become hard to beat. Running costs are roughly half those of petrol, the kits are now factory-fitted so warranties stay intact, and twin-tank designs mean you no longer surrender the entire boot. In October 2026, Mahindra joined the party with the XUV 3XO ZNG, taking on the two established choices: Maruti Suzuki's Brezza CNG and Tata's Nexon iCNG. Here is how they stack up.
The logic is simple arithmetic. Petrol in most Indian cities costs well over ₹100 a litre, while CNG is typically sold at a meaningful discount per kilogram, and a CNG engine is more efficient in km per unit than its petrol counterpart. For a family that clocks 12,000 to 18,000 km a year, that difference runs into lakhs over the life of the car. Add factory-fitted kits that no longer void the warranty, and CNG stops being a compromise and becomes a strategy.
The segment has also matured in a way that removes the old objections. Twin-tank designs place the cylinders under the boot floor, so you keep a usable luggage bay and the spare wheel. Automatic petrol-to-CNG switching means you are never stranded. And crucially, all three cars here are five-seaters with six airbags and modern connectivity, so a CNG SUV no longer means giving up on safety or features.
The Brezza's 1.5-litre engine runs on CNG at 88hp and 121.5Nm, down from its petrol outputs, and Maruti has used an underbody kit that keeps the full boot space intact. The headline is efficiency: ARAI certifies it at 26.90 km/kg, the best of this trio, helped by a mild-hybrid setup. CNG variants start at about ₹9.30 lakh and run to roughly ₹11.50 lakh ex-showroom. If your priority is the lowest running cost and the widest service network, this is the default pick.
Mahindra's first mainstream CNG passenger car in years is also the most powerful here. The XUV 3XO ZNG uses a 1.2-litre turbo-petrol engine that keeps its full 111hp and 200Nm even in CNG mode, thanks to a higher-pressure 10-bar injection system — Mahindra claims no performance drop, with a 0-100 kmph time of 11.8 seconds. The twin underfloor tanks leave 270 litres of boot space. Prices run from ₹9.99 lakh to ₹12.27 lakh. The trade-off is that the CNG range skips the most loaded trims, so ventilated seats and ADAS are off the table.
Tata's Nexon iCNG was India's first turbocharged factory CNG SUV, and it remains the most feature-rich of the three. Its 1.2-litre turbo engine produces 100hp and 170Nm in CNG mode, certified at 24 km/kg. Twin tanks under the boot floor preserve 321 litres of luggage space. The range spans about ₹8.35 lakh to ₹13.30 lakh, the widest here, and it is the only one of the three with a five-star Bharat NCAP rating to its name. The catches are a less refined engine than rivals and Tata's service experience, which owners rate as uneven.
