BYD's Denza Confirms India Entry: 1,156hp Z9 GT and D9 MPV Incoming

By AUTOASTRA Editorial · 2 Oct 2026 · Launch

BYD's luxury brand Denza has confirmed its India entry, with the 1,156hp Z9 GT shooting brake and the D9 electric MPV expected to arrive above the Rs 80 lakh mark.

Denza Is Coming to India

BYD's luxury sub-brand Denza has officially confirmed its India entry, teasing its arrival through a social media post that shows its blue-and-silver hourglass logo above the words "Arriving soon". The brand says it will bring a "sophisticated, high-performance EV experience" to India, and it will sit above BYD's existing line-up, targeting the Rs 80 lakh-plus space.

Two models are expected to lead the charge: the Z9 GT, a four-door shooting brake, and the D9, a large luxury MPV. Both will arrive as fully imported completely built-up units, and Denza will be retailed through dedicated showrooms kept separate from BYD, starting in the Delhi-NCR and Mumbai regions.

The Z9 GT is the headline act. Its 122.5kWh battery feeds three electric motors for a combined 1,156hp, sent to all four wheels, which is enough for a claimed 0-100kph time of 2.7 seconds and a 270kph top speed. It also supports 1,500kW ultra-fast charging, which Denza says can take the battery from 10 to 97 per cent in nine minutes. Rear-wheel steering enables party tricks such as crab walk and a full 360-degree turn. The D9 takes a gentler route, with a front-mounted motor producing 313hp and 360Nm, a 520km range and a 2+2+3 cabin with massaging second-row captain seats. You can follow our electric vehicle coverage for the launch timeline.

Denza was founded in 2010 as a joint venture between BYD and Mercedes-Benz, before the German brand exited entirely in 2024, leaving the marque with BYD. It already sells in China, Europe, Australia, Southeast Asia and Latin America. In India, the D9 will take on the MG M9 and Toyota Vellfire, while the Z9 GT occupies a much smaller niche where the Porsche Taycan is the closest rival. Our home page tracks new brand entries.

BYD has been held back in India by Press Note 3, the 2020 rule that requires prior government approval for investments from countries sharing a land border with India. Moving upmarket through Denza lets BYD chase niche, high-margin segments without needing large local volumes, at least to begin with.

What this means for you: Denza is unlikely to be a volume player, but its arrival matters because it brings genuinely new technology, such as ultra-fast charging and rear-wheel steering, into a market where luxury EVs are still rare. If you are shopping at the top end, the D9 becomes a real alternative to the Vellfire and the M9, and its pricing will be the number to watch.
