Delhi Clears 382 EV Charging Sites — Tenders for First 160-180 Locations Soon

By AUTOASTRA Editorial · 6 Oct 2026 · Electric

The Centre has approved 382 EV charging sites in Delhi, with tenders for the first 160-180 high-readiness locations to be floated soon.

382 Sites Approved

The Ministry of Heavy Industries has approved 382 sites for setting up electric vehicle charging infrastructure in Delhi, Power Minister Ashish Sood announced. The Delhi government's Revenue Department and the Delhi Transport Corporation had identified 456 sites, of which 382 were cleared. Under the Delhi EV Policy notified on 30 June, all 382 sites were reassessed over the past three months for segment-wise deployment, with locations categorised separately for two-wheelers, three-wheelers and four-wheelers.

The government is now set to float a tender for the first tranche of 160 to 180 high-readiness sites, prioritising locations where power availability and grid feasibility are already confirmed. KPMG has been onboarded as the Project Management Unit to oversee implementation.

The Deadlines Behind the Push

The urgency comes from the policy's statutory mandates. From 1 January 2027, only electric three-wheelers and N1 light commercial vehicles will be registered in Delhi, and from 1 April 2028 only electric two-wheelers will be. The government says it has recorded a 30 per cent rise in electric two-wheeler registrations in the first three months of the new policy, between July and September.

What This Means for You

Charging infrastructure has been the single biggest worry for would-be EV buyers in the capital, and site approval is a genuine step forward. But approval is not the same as chargers being operational, and with the three-wheeler mandate arriving in January 2027, the pace of rollout will decide whether the transition is convenient or creates a new bottleneck. For two-wheeler and car buyers, the more relevant deadline is April 2028, and the test will be whether the remaining sites get their power connections in time.
