Electric three-wheeler retail sales rose 40% to 86,024 units in September 2026, taking their share of India's three-wheeler market to 64.9%.
India's electric three-wheeler retail sales climbed 40% year-on-year to 86,024 units in September 2026, up from 61,434 units a year earlier, according to FADA data. More telling than the volume is the share: e-three-wheelers now account for 64.9% of the overall three-wheeler market, up from 56.7% in September 2025. That 8.2 percentage-point jump means nearly two of every three new three-wheelers sold in India are now electric, a shift that has happened largely on economics rather than incentives.
Bajaj tops the e-three-wheeler sales chart, followed by the Mahindra Group and TVS Motor Company. YC Electric Vehicle was the only tracked player to post a year-on-year decline. Mahindra Last Mile Mobility says the passenger auto segment has now crossed 45% electrification nationally, with several markets exceeding 90% penetration.

Analysts caution that the easy gains are behind the category. Poonam Upadhyay, Director at Crisil Ratings, said e-three-wheelers have established a clear lead, and that the next leg of growth is likely to be more gradual and increasingly driven by replacement demand, as compressed natural gas (CNG) remains a major alternative in some cities. TVS's Rajat Gupta noted that CNG will keep coexisting with electric in markets where its infrastructure makes sense, including Chennai, Bengaluru and Mumbai.
The shift is reshaping the commercial vehicle market too. September 2026 was the first month in which overall commercial vehicle registrations crossed the one-lakh mark, rising 38% year-on-year, and electric three-wheelers were a meaningful part of that momentum. For a fleet operator, the appeal is straightforward: lower running and maintenance costs translate directly into higher daily earnings, which is why adoption is now being driven by economics rather than subsidies.
For a driver running a last-mile route, the math has already flipped: lower running and maintenance costs, improving range and a denser charging network make an electric three-wheeler cheaper to operate than a diesel or CNG one on most city routes. The practical question is no longer whether to go electric, but which brand offers the best uptime and service backup. Operators comparing total cost of ownership can use our EV running-cost calculator, and our sales tracker follows how quickly each segment is electrifying.
