India's electric two-wheeler market has posted its strongest month yet. Retail sales reached 2,07,850 units in September 2026, an 89% jump over the same month last year, according to dealer retail data tracked by FADA and reported by Autocar Professional. The bigger signal sits in the half-year numbers: e-2W volumes rose 76% to 11,24,072 units in H1 FY27, the first time the segment has crossed the one-million mark in the first half of a financial year.
The leaderboard has reshuffled. TVS Motor led H1 FY27 with 2,90,001 units, ahead of Bajaj Auto on 2,53,521 and Ather Energy on 1,79,661. The most striking line is Ola Electric, once the market leader, which recorded 85,645 units in the half, down 23% year-on-year. Legacy two-wheeler makers with dense dealer and service networks have converted that advantage into electric volume.
| Brand | H1 FY27 units | Trend |
|---|---|---|
| TVS Motor | 2,90,001 | Market leader |
| Bajaj Auto | 2,53,521 | Second |
| Ather Energy | 1,79,661 | Third |
| Ola Electric | 85,645 | Down 23% year-on-year |
Scale is quietly reshaping the ownership case. As volumes climb, the network of authorised service points, spare availability and resale demand for electric scooters improves, which were the three weakest links in the early years. Government support has helped too, with the PM E-DRIVE scheme extended and state-level incentives continuing. None of this makes every model a good buy; a scooter with a weak local service footprint is still a risk, however strong the headline market data looks.
For buyers, the practical read is that the segment has matured enough to compare on total cost of ownership rather than novelty. Our EV running-cost calculator and the sales tracker let you check running costs and see how individual brands are performing before you shortlist. September's base-distorted overall market growth means the coming months will be a truer test of whether this electric momentum holds.
There is a caveat worth flagging. September's headline growth was flattered by a weak base, and FADA itself has called the month the year's most base-distorted print. From October, year-on-year comparisons get harder because last year's festive quarter was boosted by GST cuts and pent-up demand. An 89% jump is real, but it will not repeat every month, so buyers should read the trend rather than any single month's number.
