Hyundai has revealed the India-spec Bayon ahead of its 26 October launch, with a 115 PS 1.5-litre petrol engine, twin 12.3-inch screens and a Perplexity-powered AI voice assistant.
Hyundai Motor India has unveiled the India-spec Bayon ahead of its launch on 26 October, and the pitch is deliberately unusual for this price bracket. Rather than leading with a turbocharger or a big sunroof, Hyundai is selling the Bayon as an "Intelligent Utility Vehicle" built around connected technology and software. Bookings are open for ₹11,000 on Hyundai's website and at dealerships.
The headline feature is a generative AI voice assistant built on Perplexity's technology and SoundHound AI's voice engine. Hyundai says it can hold a conversation about travel arrangements, hotel and restaurant suggestions, weather and sports, and it will launch in English. It is the first time Hyundai has used this setup in India.
| Feature | Hyundai Bayon (India-spec) |
|---|---|
| Engine | 1.5-litre four-cylinder MPi petrol |
| Power and torque | 115 PS and 144 Nm |
| Gearbox | 6-speed manual or IVT automatic |
| Displays | Dual 12.3-inch screens |
| Technology | Generative AI assistant, OTA updates, Hyundai Bluelink |
The Bayon will slot between the Venue and the Creta, giving Hyundai a second midsize SUV. It is expected to use the Creta's 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine in both petrol and CNG forms, and it is tipped to be the first Hyundai in India with an underbody CNG tank. The design follows Hyundai's Art of Steel language, with L-shaped front and rear LEDs, an upward-sloping window line and rakish proportions.
The infotainment runs on an NVIDIA-based system with continuous over-the-air updates, and Hyundai's Bluelink connectivity is part of the package. Prices and full variant details will be announced on 26 October, with deliveries starting during the festive season.
Hyundai is betting that a car which answers questions in plain language is a more convincing showroom hook than another horsepower bump. It is a calculated risk. Buyers in this segment usually weigh mileage, service costs and resale value first, and an AI assistant only earns its keep if it works every time you speak to it. Still, if the assistant is genuinely useful, it becomes a feature rivals cannot copy quickly, because it depends on software partnerships rather than hardware.
If you are shopping between the Venue and the Creta, the Bayon is designed to be the middle answer, more spacious than the Venue but more affordable than a loaded Creta. Whether it earns your money will come down to pricing on 26 October and how good the assistant feels in daily use.
