Hyundai Opens ₹7,000-Crore Pune Plant, Commits $15.5 Billion to India by 2032

By AUTOASTRA Editorial · 16 Oct 2026 · News

Hyundai has inaugurated its new Pune plant and pledged $15.5 billion for India through 2032, aiming to lift annual capacity towards one million vehicles and localisation to 92 percent.

Hyundai's Biggest India Bet Yet

Hyundai has formally inaugurated its new manufacturing plant at Talegaon Dabhade in Pune, a facility built on the site of a former General Motors factory the company acquired in 2023. The plant starts with an annual capacity of 1,70,000 units, with plans to reach 2,50,000 within two years and 3,20,000 by 2030. Combined with its two Chennai plants, which together build 8,24,000 units a year, Hyundai's India capacity now sits close to the one million mark.

The inauguration, attended by Hyundai Motor Group executive chair Chung Euisun and Maharashtra chief minister Devendra Fadnavis, came a day after the group announced a $15.5 billion investment plan for India covering 2026 to 2032. Of that, Hyundai Motor India chief executive Tarun Garg said ₹4,000 crore will go to Maharashtra by 2030, on top of ₹7,000 crore already invested in the state.

The Pune plant's first product is the second-generation, all-new Venue compact SUV, destined for the domestic market and exports to more than 30 countries across Latin America, Africa and the Middle East. Moving Venue production to Pune frees up Chennai's lines to build more electric vehicles.

Localisation, EVs and Exports

Garg said Hyundai wants to raise localisation in Maharashtra from 83 percent to 92 percent, and confirmed four EVs for India by 2029 alongside fresh investment in charging infrastructure. The company also plans hybrids, targeting a portfolio that is 50 percent sustainable by 2030. On exports, Hyundai says it is the first company in India to cross four million cumulative vehicle exports and wants to push higher. The Pune plant will also use AI heavily for quality inspection, according to Chung, who described charging infrastructure as the main bottleneck for India's EV shift.

What It Means for Buyers

For buyers, the Pune investment is more than a ribbon-cutting. Deeper localisation usually means lower costs over time, faster availability of new models and better spare-part pricing. Hyundai has slipped from second to fourth in India's sales charts in recent years, and a 26-model plan paired with new capacity is its answer.
