India has topped the US in the share of new cars that are fully electric for six straight months since April 2026, per energy think tank Ember, even as absolute volumes stay far smaller.
India has recorded a higher share of fully electric new car sales than the United States for six consecutive months, from April 2026, according to the global energy think tank Ember. The finding comes from Ember's EV sales tracker, which covers 56 countries and places India among 15 nations that overtook the US during 2026, alongside Brazil, Italy, Malaysia and New Zealand.
The important caveat is that this is a comparison of proportion, not of scale. In April 2026, India's battery-electric share of new car sales stood at 5.8%, against 5.1% in the US, according to Vahan registration data cited in the report. Yet in absolute terms, India sold roughly 23,500 electric cars that month against about 70,000 in the United States. India's market is smaller; its electric slice of that market is simply growing faster.
Ember attributes the US slowdown to the rollback of federal EV incentives, which had previously propped up demand; US battery-electric share fell to about 6% of light-duty sales across the first eight months of 2026. India moved the other way, helped by fresh model launches, better product availability and rising buyer acceptance. India's electric passenger vehicle sales crossed 192,000 units in the first half of FY27, and September set a monthly retail record.
| Metric | India | United States |
|---|---|---|
| BEV share, April 2026 | 5.8% | 5.1% |
| Electric cars sold, April 2026 | About 23,500 | About 70,000 |
| BEV share, first 8 months of 2026 | Rising through the year | About 6% |
| Latest monthly EV share | 7.6% (October 2026 so far) | Not comparable |
On the ground, the numbers are moving. In October 2026 so far, electric cars made up 7.6% of every car registered in India, against 3.7% in the same month last year — a jump of nearly four percentage points, according to Vahan data. Tata Motors continues to lead, holding around a 40% share of the electric car market, with Mahindra Electric Automobile and MG Motor filling out the top three.
The milestone matters less as a scoreboard than as a signal: affordable electric models, wider choice and state-level incentives are pushing EVs past the early-adopter stage in India. Charging infrastructure and the upfront price gap remain the two real brakes on faster growth.
