Mahindra has filed a design patent for the production Vision S, a boxy sub-four-metre SUV on the NU_IQ platform that is expected to arrive in 2027.
Mahindra and Mahindra has filed a design registration with the Indian patent office for the production version of its Vision S SUV, giving the clearest look yet at how the sub-four-metre model will appear in showrooms. The filing, lodged with the Office of the Controller General of Patents, Designs and Trade Marks, shows a vehicle that closely mirrors the concept Mahindra unveiled on Independence Day last year.
The images reveal a boxy, upright silhouette with minimal curves, squared-off headlamps, a single horizontal slat running outward and a grille with vertical slats set above a chunky bumper. Short overhangs, a flat roofline and flush-fitting door handles carry over from the concept, and the design is finished with a tailgate-mounted spare wheel and flared wheel arches that borrow visibly from the Thar and Scorpio.
| Mahindra Vision S | Expected detail |
|---|---|
| Segment | Sub-4m SUV |
| Platform | NU_IQ (petrol, diesel, hybrid, electric) |
| Wheelbase | 2,665mm |
| Positioning | Above XUV 3XO |
| Expected launch | 2027 |
| Rivals | Maruti Jimny, Renault Bridger, Tata Scarlet |
The Vision S is expected to be among the first production SUVs on Mahindra's new NU_IQ modular platform, a multi-energy architecture that can accommodate petrol, diesel, hybrid and electric powertrains and spans lengths of roughly 3,990mm to 4,320mm. That flexibility lets Mahindra position variants across the sub-four-metre bracket while sharing underlying engineering, which is central to keeping costs down in the most price-sensitive part of the SUV market.
Mahindra has not disclosed powertrain details for the production model, and it is not yet clear whether the car will retain the concept's 4x4 ambitions or lean towards front-wheel-drive variants for cost reasons.
The sub-four-metre SUV segment is where much of India's volume sits, and Mahindra has historically ceded ground here. A credible, rugged lifestyle offering would round out a portfolio that already spans the Thar, Scorpio and XUV range, and it would put real pressure on the Maruti Jimny, currently the only mainstream ladder-frame option in this bracket. With the design registration in place, a formal unveiling is likely next, though pricing and a production name have not been announced.
