Mahindra XUV 3XO CNG Debuts Today — Price, Engine and Rivals Explained

By AUTOASTRA Editorial · 15 Oct 2026 · Launch

Mahindra unveils its first CNG model, the XUV 3XO CNG, on 15 October, joining the Brezza S-CNG and Nexon iCNG in the fast-growing factory-CNG compact SUV race.

Mahindra Finally Enters the CNG Race

Mahindra and Mahindra unveils the XUV 3XO CNG on 15 October, its first factory-fitted CNG vehicle. The compact SUV already offers petrol, diesel and electric power, and adding gas makes it only the third model in its class with a CNG option, after the Maruti Suzuki Brezza S-CNG and the Tata Nexon iCNG. Hyundai's Venue and Kia's Sonet still go without factory CNG, and that gap is exactly what Mahindra is targeting.

The timing is deliberate. The compact SUV and crossover segment runs at roughly 30,000 vehicles a month, and Mahindra wants the cost-conscious petrol buyer who is not ready to go electric. The debut lands squarely in the festive season, when running-cost worries weigh heaviest.

What We Know About the Engine and Kit

The CNG version is expected to use the 1.2-litre multi-point fuel injection turbo-petrol engine, adapted to run on compressed natural gas through a factory kit. In petrol form that unit produces about 111hp and 200Nm. Mahindra has teased a panoramic sunroof and a front design close to the REVX range. Leaked images point to a twin-cylinder tank layout, which is the neat trick that lets CNG cars keep more of their boot than a single large cylinder would allow, though Mahindra has not confirmed this.

Pricing is the open question. The XUV 3XO petrol range runs from ₹7.79 lakh to ₹15.04 lakh ex-showroom, and a CNG premium of roughly ₹1 lakh would put the new variant somewhere between ₹8.5 lakh and ₹9.5 lakh. Reports suggest the CNG trim will sit higher up the range, which would make it dearer than both the Nexon iCNG and the Brezza S-CNG at entry level.

The Maths That Sells CNG

At illustrative rates of ₹105 a litre for petrol and ₹80 a kg for CNG, a petrol SUV returning 13 kmpl costs about ₹8 per kilometre to run, against roughly ₹4 per kilometre for a CNG vehicle returning 20 km/kg. A buyer driving 1,500 km a month could save around ₹6,000 a month, recovering a ₹1 lakh premium in about 16 months. That payback only works if a pump is close by, which is why CNG remains an urban and NCR story more than a national one.

What This Means for You

The XUV 3XO was launched in April 2024 and has racked up 257,097 units in 30 months, while the XUV 3XO and XUV300 together have now crossed five lakh wholesales. Adding CNG widens its appeal without touching the engineering underneath. If you want an SUV with a panoramic sunroof and a fuel bill that behaves, this is worth a showroom visit once prices are out.
