Mercedes-Benz India is betting that the richest car buyers will pay extra for the one thing a pure electric car cannot yet guarantee in this country: certainty. In an interview with PTI, CEO Santosh Iyer said luxury customers are willing to pay a 5-6% premium for plug-in hybrids (PHEVs), which pair a combustion engine with a chargeable battery. The appeal is simple. A PHEV such as the Maybach S-Class offers around 100 km of electric-only range for daily use, but still runs on petrol when charging is not possible.
Iyer framed plug-in hybrids as an interim technology that balances both worlds, and pointed to two advantages over pure EVs for this segment: peace of mind on long drives and better residual value. That trade-off matters in a market where high-end charging is improving but still uneven outside major metros. Mercedes has begun rolling the technology out, debuting it on the Maybach S-Class, and has already started delivering the E53 AMG PHEV. Deliveries of the S-Class and Maybach S-Class PHEVs are expected by the end of October.
| Powertrain (luxury context) | Strength | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Plug-in hybrid (PHEV) | 100 km electric range plus petrol back-up | Priced 5-6% higher |
| Pure EV | Lowest running cost, no tailpipe emissions | Charging and range anxiety remain |
| Petrol or diesel ICE | No charging dependence | No electric driving benefit |
The strategy comes against a strong year for the brand locally. Mercedes-Benz India sales rose 8% to a record 15,190 units in January-September 2026, with its EV portfolio growing 16% in the same period and EV penetration running at 8-9%. The Maybach S 580 e plug-in hybrid was launched earlier in October at ₹3.35 crore in a limited 30-car launch batch, confirming that the company is serious about electrified luxury.
For Indian luxury buyers, the message is that the choice is no longer EV versus petrol. A plug-in hybrid is now a third option, and for someone who wants electric running in the city without depending on a public charger, it may be the most practical one.
