JSW MG Motor has discontinued the Astor midsize SUV after slow sales. A replacement, likely on the SIGMA platform, is expected in India in 2027.
JSW MG Motor India has discontinued the Astor, the midsize SUV it launched in 2021, according to dealer sources. The move ends a short and difficult run for a car that was meant to take on the Hyundai Creta and Kia Seltos, but never came close. From September 2025 to September 2026, the Astor averaged just 112 units a month.
The problem was not the car's equipment. The Astor looked smart and came with connected-car features at a time when rivals were still catching up. What it lacked was choice under the bonnet. Where the competition offered petrol, diesel, CNG and hybrid options, the Astor shipped with only two petrol engines, and one of those, the 1.3-litre turbo, was dropped in February 2025, leaving just a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated unit.

Two other factors hurt it. The Astor's low-slung, crossover-like stance made it look smaller than its upright rivals, which matters in a segment where road presence sells. And an electric counterpart, the ZS EV, sat well above it on price, so it could not pull buyers into the showroom the way the MG Windsor EV later did.
| Metric | Detail |
|---|---|
| Model | MG Astor midsize SUV |
| India launch | 2021 |
| Average monthly sales | 112 units (Sept 2025 to Sept 2026) |
| Engines offered | 1.5 petrol; 1.3 turbo (dropped Feb 2025) |
| Replacement platform | SIGMA, expected 2027 |
The discontinuation is a reminder that in India's most competitive segment, powertrain breadth is not a luxury. Buyers compare a Creta against a Seltos against a Grand Vitara, and a car that offers fewer ways to spend money tends to lose.

MG is not abandoning the segment. The company is readying a replacement on its SIGMA modular platform, which can accommodate petrol, hybrid and electric powertrains, directly addressing the gap that sank the Astor. It is expected in 2027, alongside a broader JSW MG product offensive that includes the IM6 electric SUV and a three-row plug-in hybrid.
The SIGMA platform is the key. Because it can take a conventional engine, a hybrid system or a battery, MG will be able to offer the same body with different powertrains, which is exactly the flexibility the Astor lacked. If the replacement delivers on that, it will at least be fighting on equal terms.
For existing Astor owners, a discontinuation does not automatically end service or spare-parts support, but it is worth confirming warranty and parts availability with your dealership. Buyers who want a midsize SUV today can compare the segment on the comparison tool or check resale expectations on the value tool.
