MG Select introduces Battery-as-a-Service for Cyberster and M9 EVs, cutting upfront prices to Rs 72.49 lakh and Rs 69.99 lakh with Rs 8 per km rental.
JSW MG Motor India has extended its Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS) ownership programme to the MG Cyberster roadster and the MG M9 luxury MPV through its premium retail brand MG Select. Under the introductory scheme, buyers pay a lower upfront price for the vehicle and a battery rental of Rs 8 per kilometre driven, with no mechanical or feature changes to either car.
The Cyberster's entry price drops from Rs 82.50 lakh to Rs 72.49 lakh (ex-showroom) under BaaS, while the M9 falls from Rs 79.95 lakh to Rs 69.99 lakh, an upfront reduction of roughly Rs 10 lakh on each model. Both cars have seen two rounds of price increases in 2026, in April and July, and the BaaS route effectively returns their entry points to close to 2025 launch-day levels, in exchange for the ongoing per-kilometre fee.
| Model | Outright Price | BaaS Price | Upfront Saving | Battery Rental |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| MG Cyberster | Rs 82.50 lakh | Rs 72.49 lakh | Rs 10.01 lakh | Rs 8 per km |
| MG M9 | Rs 79.95 lakh | Rs 69.99 lakh | Rs 9.96 lakh | Rs 8 per km |
The math deserves attention. Dividing the roughly Rs 10 lakh upfront saving by the Rs 8 per km rental works out to about 1.25 lakh kilometres before the rental outgo matches the saving, a genuinely large distance for typically low-mileage, often chauffeur-driven luxury vehicles. Buyers should also weigh the resale value of a battery-on-rental car against one with an owned pack.
The Cyberster pairs a 77 kWh battery with a dual-motor all-wheel-drive setup producing 503 bhp and 725 Nm, sprinting from 0 to 100 kmph in 3.2 seconds with a claimed range of 580 km. The M9 uses a 90 kWh battery and a single motor producing about 245 hp and 350 Nm, with a claimed range of 548 km and 30 to 80 percent charging in around 30 minutes.
MG already runs the same battery-subscription playbook on the mass-market Windsor EV, and Kia and Royal Enfield offer similar structures on the Carens Clavis EV and Flying Flea C6 respectively, signalling that per-kilometre battery pricing is becoming a mainstream EV purchasing model in India. MG Select currently operates 15 experience centres across 14 cities, and JSW MG has cumulatively sold more than 1.5 lakh EVs in India.
