Renault Duster Strong Hybrid Launches 17 October — 160hp E-Tech 160, No Diesel

By AUTOASTRA Editorial · 9 Oct 2026 · Launch

Renault will price the Duster E-Tech 160 strong hybrid in India on 17 October, replacing diesel with a 160hp 1.8-litre hybrid setup expected from around ₹19 lakh.

Duster Hybrid: Renault's Answer to the Toyota Hybrids

Renault India will finally put a price on the Duster E-Tech 160 on 17 October, and the message is unusually blunt. The launch invite reads "Dear diesel, thank you for the ride" — a clear signal that the strong hybrid takes over from the diesel engine that the new-generation Duster never offered here. It also marks the India debut of Renault's own Hybrid E-Tech technology.

The hybrid becomes the third powertrain in the Duster line-up, sitting above the 1.0-litre and 1.3-litre turbo-petrol engines. Renault has said its planned 2026 hybrid allocation is already fully booked, with fresh bookings expected to reopen ahead of deliveries around Diwali.

What the E-Tech 160 Actually Is

Unlike the Toyota-derived hybrid systems in its closest rivals, the Duster uses Renault's own architecture. A 1.8-litre four-cylinder naturally aspirated petrol engine works alongside two electric motors — a 49hp traction motor that drives the wheels and a 20hp starter-generator that handles starting and charging. A 1.4kWh lithium-ion battery stores energy recovered under braking.

Combined output is about 160hp and 172Nm, channelled through a segment-first eight-speed dedicated hybrid transmission. Renault claims up to 80 percent of city driving can be completed in pure electric mode, which is where the fuel savings sit.

Why the Hybrid Matters More Than the Numbers

On paper the Duster hybrid holds a power advantage over the Toyota-powered trio, which run a 1.5-litre three-cylinder unit rated at 116hp. The bigger engine, larger battery and multi-ratio gearbox should translate into stronger highway pulling power and quieter cruising, though final efficiency figures will only be confirmed at launch.

The price, though, is the real question. Strong-hybrid variants of the Grand Vitara, Hyryder and Victoris sit in the ₹16 lakh to ₹20 lakh band. If Renault lands the E-Tech 160 inside or below that window, it can win buyers who want SUV practicality without the range anxiety of an EV. For Renault, the Duster hybrid is less a niche product than a volume bet. The company's India sales and marketing head has publicly called hybrids "the perfect transition" between petrol cars and EVs. With diesel gone and pure-electric still years away for most buyers, this is the powertrain Renault is counting on. Full details of the Duster's variants are on its model page.
