A JATO Dynamics study shows rural India took 55 percent of India's two-wheeler registrations in January-June 2026, with 100-125cc commuter motorcycles driving demand.
Rural India accounted for 55 percent of all two-wheeler registrations in the first half of calendar 2026, according to a new JATO Dynamics study, comfortably ahead of urban markets at 32 percent and metro cities at just 13 percent. The finding underlines a structural shift in India's largest vehicle segment: the rural buyer, not the metro commuter, now decides which two-wheeler brands win.
| Market | Share of two-wheeler registrations | Petrol share | EV penetration |
| Rural | 55 percent | 94 percent | 5.9 percent |
| Urban | 32 percent | about 89 percent | 10.7 percent |
| Metro | 13 percent | about 89 percent | 10.9 percent |
Motorcycles dominate rural demand, contributing 68.3 percent of rural two-wheeler registrations, and within that, entry-level and commuter machines of 100-125cc made up 75 percent of rural motorcycle registrations. Scooters represented 24 percent of rural registrations, with demand split evenly between 90-110cc and 125cc models. Rajasthan stands out as the most commuter-focused state, with 74 percent of its registrations in the 100-110cc bracket, while Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh remain similarly skewed towards small-displacement motorcycles.
The electric story is the most interesting split in the data. EV penetration in rural India stands at just 5.9 percent, roughly half the 10.7-10.9 percent seen in urban and metro markets — but TVS and Bajaj jointly command 56 percent of rural EV registrations, showing the established two-wheeler giants are already winning the countryside's early electric adopters. That rural-urban gap is the single biggest growth runway for electric two-wheelers, and you can track how it closes in our monthly registration data and two-wheeler coverage.
If you are a rural buyer, the market is moving towards you: manufacturers plan their commuter product cycles around your preferences now, and the slow rural EV uptake means heavy competition on price and service reach over the next two years. For city buyers, the data is a reminder that resale value on 100-125cc commuters remains rock solid because demand for them is national, not just urban.
