Every 5-star Bharat NCAP car on sale in India in 2026, ranked by budget — from the Tata Punch at ₹5.75 lakh to the Mahindra XEV 9e, with verified crash scores.
Bharat NCAP (BNCAP) is India's own car safety assessment programme, launched by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways in October 2023. Manufacturers voluntarily submit cars for crash testing under the AIS-194 protocol, which is closely aligned with Global NCAP's procedures. Each car is scored out of 32 points for adult occupant protection and 49 points for child occupant protection, with separate star ratings for both. Crucially, BNCAP generally tests the base variant, so a 5-star rating usually applies to every version on sale — a car cannot hide behind a well-equipped top trim.
The results so far have reshaped the market. Of the 30 models tested since the programme began, 28 have secured the full 5-star rating, and only the Maruti Baleno and Citroen Basalt have missed out. Tata Motors leads the table with ten 5-star models, Mahindra has five, Maruti Suzuki has four, and Kia, Hyundai, Renault, VinFast, Toyota and Skoda each have at least one. Here is every 5-star car you can buy right now, sorted by what it costs.
The budget end of the market is where BNCAP has done its most important work. Six models priced under ₹10 lakh (ex-showroom) now carry 5-star ratings, which means a family shopping for its first car no longer has to trade safety for affordability.
| Car | BNCAP Adult Score | BNCAP Child Score | Price (Ex-Showroom) | Key Safety Kit |
| Tata Punch | 30.58 / 32 | 45.00 / 49 | ₹5.75 lakh onwards | 6 airbags, ESC, TPMS |
| Tata Altroz | 29.65 / 32 | 44.90 / 49 | ₹6.00 lakh onwards | 6 airbags, ESC |
| Tata Nexon | 29.41 / 32 | 43.83 / 49 | ₹7.40 lakh onwards | 6 airbags, ESC, hill hold |
| Skoda Kylaq | 30.88 / 32 | 45.00 / 49 | ₹7.59 lakh onwards | 6 airbags, ESC |
| Mahindra XUV 3XO | 29.36 / 32 | 43.00 / 49 | ₹7.79 lakh onwards | 6 airbags, ESC |
| Kia Syros | 30.21 / 32 | 44.42 / 49 | ₹8.42 lakh onwards | 6 airbags, ESC, TPMS |
The Tata Punch remains the most affordable 5-star-rated SUV in the country, while the Skoda Kylaq posted the strongest adult score of this group at 30.88 out of 32. The Hyundai Venue, tested in March 2026 with 31.15 points, also joins the 5-star list with prices starting under ₹8 lakh. Note that some ratings, including the Punch and Syros, officially apply to select variants, so confirm the tested configuration before you book.
This is the most competitive safety battleground in the market, because these sedans and SUVs cross-shop directly with each other. Eight models in this band carry 5-star ratings, including the highest adult score recorded by any petrol or diesel car in India.
| Car | BNCAP Adult Score | BNCAP Child Score | Price (Ex-Showroom) | Key Safety Kit |
| Kia Seltos | 31.70 / 32 | 45.00 / 49 | ₹11.00 lakh onwards | 6 airbags, ESC |
| Tata Sierra | 31.14 / 32 | 44.73 / 49 | ₹11.49 lakh onwards | 6 airbags, ESC, all disc brakes |
| Mahindra Thar Roxx | 31.09 / 32 | 45.00 / 49 | ₹12.52 lakh onwards | 6 airbags, ESC |
| Tata Harrier | 30.08 / 32 | 44.54 / 49 | ₹13.00 lakh onwards | 6 airbags, ESC |
| Tata Safari | 30.08 / 32 | 44.54 / 49 | ₹13.40 lakh onwards | 6 airbags, ESC |
| Mahindra BE 6 | 31.97 / 32 | 45.00 / 49 | ₹15.45 lakh onwards | 6 airbags, ESC, TPMS |
| Maruti Suzuki e Vitara | 31.49 / 32 | 43.00 / 49 | ₹15.99 lakh onwards | 7 airbags, Level 2 ADAS |
| Toyota Innova Hycross | 30.47 / 32 | 45.00 / 49 | ₹18.92 lakh onwards | 6 airbags, ESC |
The Kia Seltos, tested in March 2026, sits at the top of this band with 31.70 points — the highest adult score among combustion cars. The Maruti Suzuki e Vitara is the standout on equipment: seven airbags and a Level 2 ADAS suite are standard, a first for Maruti. The Innova Hycross rating applies across both petrol and hybrid versions, and the Mahindra BE 6 missed a perfect adult score by just 0.03 points.
At the premium end, safety is increasingly the price of entry rather than a differentiator, and two Indian EVs have set the benchmark for the entire programme.
| Car | BNCAP Adult Score | BNCAP Child Score | Price (Ex-Showroom) | Key Safety Kit |
| Tata Harrier EV | 32.00 / 32 | 45.00 / 49 | ₹21.49 lakh onwards | 6 airbags, ESC |
| Mahindra XEV 9e | 32.00 / 32 | 45.00 / 49 | ₹21.90 lakh onwards | 6 airbags, rear discs, TPMS |
| Maruti Suzuki Invicto | 30.43 / 32 | 44.90 / 49 | ₹24.97 lakh onwards | 6 airbags, ESC |
The Mahindra XEV 9e was the first car ever tested by BNCAP to score a perfect 32 out of 32 for adult occupant protection, and the Tata Harrier EV matched it. Both also scored 45 out of 49 for child protection. Two perfect scores, both from Indian manufacturers and both electric, is the clearest signal yet of how far the domestic industry has come.
A 5-star badge is not a blanket guarantee, and the one 3-star result in the entire BNCAP catalogue explains why. The Maruti Baleno's 6-airbag variants were rated 4 stars with 26.52 points, but its 2-airbag base variants scored just 24.04 points — a 3-star result for the same nameplate. The car you actually drive depends on the variant you actually buy. Before booking any car, check three things on the official bncap.in website: whether the rating applies to all variants or select trims, the child occupant score (the Honda Amaze, for instance, holds 5 stars for adults but 4 stars for children at 40.81 points), and the number of airbags fitted to your specific variant. The Citroen Basalt, rated 4 stars, also applies only to select variants. Six airbags are becoming standard across the market through 2026, but entry trims of several models still ship with fewer.
Safety no longer costs a premium in India. For ₹5.75 lakh you can buy a 5-star rated car with six airbags and stability control, and for around ₹13 lakh the choice of 5-star vehicles spans compact hatchbacks to seven-seat SUVs. The smartest play in 2026 is to treat the BNCAP scorecard as your first filter and price as your second — check the variant applicability, then shortlist. If your current shortlist contains a car that has not been tested by BNCAP at all, ask why, and check whether its Global NCAP rating is recent enough to reflect the model you are being shown.
