India's electric car registrations jumped 95% to 34,894 units in September 2026, taking EV penetration to 8.2%, with Tata and Mahindra leading the charge.
India's electric passenger vehicle market nearly doubled in September 2026. Registrations rose 95 per cent year on year to 34,894 units from 17,924 units, according to Vahan data, pushing EV penetration to 8.2 per cent of the passenger vehicle market from 5.7 per cent a year earlier. The growth came despite electric cars still carrying a higher upfront price, helped by better charging infrastructure, more model choices and volatile fuel prices.
Tata Motors stayed the clear leader with a 42.2 per cent share, and Mahindra strengthened its hold on second place, overtaking JSW MG. The competitive picture has changed quickly: VinFast, in its first full year, already holds an 8.5 per cent share, while Maruti Suzuki has entered with 3.1 per cent. Our home page tracks how these shares shift each month.
| Brand | Sep 2026 EV registrations | Market share |
| Tata Motors | 14,721 | 42.2% |
| Mahindra | 7,743 | 22.2% |
| JSW MG Motor | 5,226 | 15.0% |
| VinFast | 2,961 | 8.5% |
| Maruti Suzuki | 1,095 | 3.1% |
| BYD | 831 | 2.4% |
Note: figures are from the latest Vahan snapshot for September 2026.
For the first nine months of 2026, EV registrations climbed 83 per cent to 2,48,890 units, and Tata crossed the one lakh-unit mark for the first time since entering the market in 2020. The month was also part of a wider electric boom: total EV registrations across cars, two-wheelers and three-wheelers crossed 3.3 lakh units for a fourth straight month, supported by a wider choice of models and a steadily improving charging network.
What this means for you: EVs are moving from a niche to a genuine mainstream option, and the arrival of Maruti and VinFast is already forcing sharper pricing and battery-rental schemes such as battery-as-a-service. If you are considering an EV, compare the upfront price against the battery rental and your monthly running cost before deciding, because the cheapest sticker price is not always the cheapest car to own.
