September Car Sales on Pace for Record as Festive Season Opens Strong

By AUTOASTRA Editorial · 28 Sept 2026 · News

September car sales in India are tracking 3.92 lakh registrations, up 21 percent, with Maruti at 38.6 percent share as the festive season opens strong.

September Retails Point to a Record Festive Start

India's passenger vehicle market is pacing towards a record September, with Vahan registration data for roughly the first three weeks of the month showing about 3.92 lakh units, up around 21 percent year on year, and Maruti Suzuki leading the table with 38.6 percent share. Tata and Mahindra are both registering strong growth, up 29.2 percent and 27.5 percent respectively in the period tracked, as Navratri approaches and new launches such as the Tata Aeris and Mahindra Thar OG prepare for 11 October deliveries.

The August baseline explains the momentum. FADA reported the biggest-ever August for auto retail, with passenger vehicle retails crossing 4 lakh units in the month for the first time. On the wholesale side, SIAM recorded 4,39,309 domestic PV dispatches, up 36.5 percent and the highest ever for August, as factories filled dealer lots ahead of the festive season.

Inventory Is the Number to Watch

The caution flag is stock: FADA puts passenger vehicle inventory at 38 to 40 days against its recommended 21-day benchmark, the highest in recent months. Dealer sentiment nonetheless remains firmly positive, with 81.62 percent of dealers surveyed expecting growth through the September to November window, in which Dhanteras and Diwali both fall in November this year. What This Means for You

Strong demand means popular variants of new launches will carry waiting periods, but high dealer inventory on older models is already producing discounts. The smart festive strategy is to book fast-moving new models early and negotiate hardest on high-stock existing models, where deals will only improve closer to Diwali in November.
