Tata has extended Battery-as-a-Service to all its electric cars, cutting upfront prices by up to Rs 7.30 lakh. BaaS prices for Tiago EV to Harrier EV inside.
Tata has extended its Battery-as-a-Service, or BaaS, financing scheme from the small Tiago EV and Punch EV to its entire electric car line-up. The Nexon EV, Curvv EV, Sierra EV and Harrier EV can now all be bought with the battery paid for separately, and the upfront savings are substantial: up to Rs 7.30 lakh on the Harrier EV, whose entry price drops from Rs 21.79 lakh to Rs 14.49 lakh.
BaaS works as a dual-loan product. The customer finances the car without the battery through one loan, and the battery through a second agreement, paying for it on a per-kilometre usage basis. Tata has partnered with multiple financiers, and buyers can still buy the car with the battery included in the traditional way.
| Model | Battery | Regular price | BaaS price | Saving | Battery cost |
| Tiago EV | 19kWh | Rs 6.99 lakh | Rs 4.69 lakh | Rs 2.30 lakh | Rs 2.6/km |
| Punch EV | 30kWh | Rs 9.79 lakh | Rs 6.59 lakh | Rs 3.20 lakh | Rs 2.6/km |
| Nexon EV | 45kWh | Rs 14.34 lakh | Rs 8.99 lakh | Rs 5.35 lakh | Rs 4.4/km |
| Curvv EV | 55kWh | Rs 17.19 lakh | Rs 10.99 lakh | Rs 6.20 lakh | Rs 5.0/km |
| Sierra EV | 63kWh | Rs 18.79 lakh | Rs 11.99 lakh | Rs 6.80 lakh | Rs 5.5/km |
| Harrier EV | 65kWh | Rs 21.79 lakh | Rs 14.49 lakh | Rs 7.30 lakh | Rs 5.9/km |
The published BaaS prices apply to entry-level trims and assume usage of 60km per day, or 44km per day for the Tiago EV. They exclude charging costs, insurance, road tax and other statutory levies, and the battery payment varies with battery size, down payment and loan tenure.
The strategy is transparent: bring the on-paper price of an electric Tata within reach of a comparable petrol car, and recover the battery cost over the ownership period. Whether that adds up for a given buyer depends entirely on annual running. At the Harrier EV's Rs 5.9/km battery rate, a 60km-a-day user pays roughly Rs 1.06 lakh a year for the battery alone, so low-running city users benefit most.
Tata sold around 1.25-1.30 lakh electric cars in the last year according to its own guidance, and demand continues to outpace supply. More electric-car analysis on AUTOINDIA, and you can stack these models against petrol rivals on our Compare page.
What this means for you: BaaS lowers the entry barrier dramatically, but it is a financing decision, not a discount. Work out your daily running first, then compare the total of battery payments and interest against the outright price. High-mileage users may still be better off buying the battery upfront.
