Tata Motors Eyes 15 Percent Market Share as EVs Cross 25 Percent of Its Sales

By AUTOASTRA Editorial · 28 Sept 2026 · Electric

Tata Motors expects 15 percent market share soon and 20 percent by FY31 as EVs cross 25 percent of its sales and August EV volumes hit a record 16,549 units.

Tata's Passenger Car Business Sets Its Next Target

Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles expects to cross 15 percent domestic market share "very soon" and is chasing 20 percent by FY31 with 1.2 million annual sales, Managing Director Shailesh Chandra told PTI in an interview published 27 September. The company, a standalone entity since the demerger took effect on 1 October 2025, has grown nearly 40 percent over the past year and is exiting September with electric vehicles accounting for more than 25 percent of its total sales.

Demand Is Running at Three Times Supply

Chandra said demand for Tata EVs is running at roughly three times what the company can supply, and that EV penetration within its own mix would have crossed 30 percent if production could keep pace. Capacity has more than doubled to over 16,000 units a month and continues to be ramped up.

The growth plan rests on three axes: entering segments where Tata is currently absent, expanding across price points, and pushing the faster-growing powertrains. On that last front, Tata leads both the EV and CNG passenger car markets with a share higher than its overall market share. What This Means for You

More market share means Tata will fight harder on new segments and fresh product through the festive season and beyond. For EV buyers, the supply constraint is the practical takeaway: popular Tata EV variants may carry waiting periods deep into the festive quarter, so booking early matters if you want delivery before Diwali.
