Tesla India has opened its sixth experience centre in Chennai with a new collision centre, as about 680 Tesla cars have been registered in India this year.
Tesla India has opened its sixth experience centre in the country at Express Avenue Mall in Chennai, following Mumbai, Delhi, Gurugram, Bengaluru and Hyderabad, and marking the company's third location in southern India. Customers in Tamil Nadu can now experience the vehicles, place orders and take delivery locally, alongside the company's direct-to-consumer online ordering model with home delivery.
The Chennai opening comes with a more important sibling announcement: a Tesla-approved collision centre and service facility is now operational at Poonamallee. Tesla's service and body-shop network now covers Delhi, Gurugram, Mumbai, Pune, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad and Chennai. The company says its ownership model leans on software and remote diagnostics, with more than 70 percent of potential issues resolvable without a workshop visit, backed by a mobile service offering for smaller jobs. For a luxury-brand buyer, that after-sales promise has always been the missing piece of Tesla's India puzzle — and it is quietly being filled, city by city.
The sales base is still small but growing. About 680 Tesla cars have been registered in India during the current calendar year according to Vahan data cited in reports on the opening, and Tesla says customers ordering in September are being targeted for delivery before Diwali. India Managing Director Sharad Agarwal said the company was excited to keep moving closer to its customers in Tamil Nadu.
| Tesla in India — September 2026 | Detail |
|---|---|
| Experience centres | 6 — Mumbai, Delhi, Gurugram, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Chennai |
| Model Y Premium RWD price | ₹50.89 lakh, up to 500 km WLTP range |
| Model Y L price | ₹61.99 lakh, up to 681 km, three-row six-seater |
| Supercharging network | 5 stations, 20 stalls |
| Service cities | 8 including the new Poonamallee facility |
Tesla currently sells two models in India. The Model Y Premium Rear-Wheel Drive is priced at ₹50.89 lakh with a claimed range of up to 500km under WLTP testing, while the three-row, six-seat Model Y L starts at ₹61.99 lakh with a claimed 681km. The Supercharging network remains early-stage at five stations and 20 stalls nationwide, though home charging remains the primary ownership model for most buyers. Agarwal also indicated the company is shifting from touch-based controls toward voice interaction, with its AI assistant capable of conversing in several Indian languages.
What this means for you: Tesla is still a niche, import-priced purchase in India — but the pace of retail and service expansion through 2026 suggests the company is building for volume it does not yet have. If you are considering a ₹50-60 lakh electric SUV this festive season, the Model Y's Diwali delivery window and the Chennai service footprint now make it a legitimate comparison against the BMW iX1, Volvo XC40 Recharge and Mercedes EQB.
