VinFast Climbs to Fourth in India's EV Market With 8.5% Share in September

By AUTOASTRA Editorial · 5 Oct 2026 · Electric

VinFast registered 2,963 EVs in September 2026 to take fourth place and an 8.5% share, its best month yet in India, as the electric car market nearly doubled.

VinFast Moves Into India's EV Top Four

VinFast has quietly become one of the most interesting stories in India's electric car market. The Vietnamese brand registered 2,963 electric cars in September 2026, its best month since entering India, to take fourth place with an 8.5% share of the electric passenger vehicle segment, according to Vahan registration data. That is a remarkable climb for a brand that registered barely a handful of cars a year earlier.

The headline growth figure looks absurd — the year-on-year jump runs into tens of thousands of per cent — but that is simply the effect of a near-zero base. The more useful number is the month-on-month one: VinFast's registrations rose about 32% over August's 2,239 units, which points to steady, compounding demand rather than a one-off spike.

A Market That Is Widening

September was a record month for electric cars in India. Registrations totalled 35,995 units, a 94% jump over the 18,520 units of September 2025, and electric cars accounted for roughly 8% of all passenger vehicle registrations. Tata Motors led with 14,769 units and a 41% share, followed by Mahindra at 7,779 units, while MG, VinFast and Kia filled out the top five.

Why VinFast's Rise Matters

VinFast sells three passenger models in India — the VF6 and VF7 SUVs and the VF MPV 7 — and the range sits in the heart of the mid-premium EV space, where buyers compare range, warranty and financing as much as badge. Its climb to fourth shows that a newer entrant can build real volume in India within a year, provided the product and the pricing are right.

For buyers, the widening field is good news. A deeper EV market means more competition on range, features and price, and less reliance on any single brand's roadmap. It also puts pressure on established players who have leaned on early-mover advantage. Expect the next few quarters to be decided less by who started first and more by who keeps improving the product and the charging experience.
