Honda ALPHA Confirmed — Honda's First Made-in-India EV Debuts on 2 December

By AUTOASTRA Editorial · 5 Nov 2026 · Electric

Honda has named its first made-in-India electric SUV the Honda ALPHA. It makes its global debut in India on 2 December, built at Tapukara with the new H mark.

Honda ALPHA: The Name Is Official

Honda Cars India has confirmed that its first made-in-India electric SUV will be called the Honda ALPHA, and that it makes its global debut in India on 2 December 2026. Until this week the car was known as the Honda 0 Alpha, the near-production concept shown at the Japan Mobility Show in October 2025.

The name comes from the first letter of the Greek alphabet. The more consequential part of the announcement is the manufacturing plan: the ALPHA will be built at Tapukara in Rajasthan, with India serving as the model's global production base.

That table is deliberately short on the right-hand side. Honda has said nothing about range, charging speed, variant mix or price. Anyone quoting you a figure this week is quoting an estimate.

Why the New H Mark Matters More Than It Sounds

Honda has adopted a redesigned H mark worldwide, and the ALPHA is the first Honda in India to carry it in official communication. Badge changes are usually cosmetic news. This one is not, because it marks the point at which Honda stops treating India as a market for adapted global products and starts treating it as a launch market.

Honda Cars India president and CEO Toshiyuki Yanagisawa described India as the global production base for the model. Concept-stage reports suggested the car would be built in both left- and right-hand drive and exported to Japan and Southeast Asia, with no plans for North America, Europe, Australia or New Zealand.

The Segment It Lands In

The ALPHA is expected to be sized close to the global HR-V, which puts it against the Hyundai Creta Electric, the Mahindra BE 6, the Tata Sierra.ev, the Maruti Suzuki e Vitara and the Toyota Urban Cruiser Ebella. That is the most crowded part of the Indian EV market, and the part where Tata and Mahindra hold most of the volume. Honda's advantages are build quality, ride comfort and a dealer network that already exists. Its disadvantage is timing: by December its rivals will have a full festive season of discounts and deliveries behind them.

What This Means for You

If you are shopping for an electric SUV between Rs 18 lakh and Rs 25 lakh, wait four weeks. The debut will either give you a genuine alternative or force its rivals to sharpen their year-end offers. Either outcome works in your favour. Watch our news section for 2 December and use the comparison tool once prices are out. Until Honda announces a battery size and a price, treat every number, including the Rs 18 lakh to Rs 24 lakh band circulating in the market, as an expectation rather than a fact.
