Mercedes-Benz GLC Electric Launched at Rs 78.50 Lakh — Sold Out Until March 2027

By AUTOASTRA Editorial · 5 Nov 2026 · Launch

Mercedes-Benz has launched the GLC Electric in India at Rs 78.50 lakh, locally built at Chakan with a 711km WLTP range, and it is already sold out until March 2027.

Mercedes-Benz GLC Electric Price in India

Mercedes-Benz India has launched the GLC Electric at Rs 78.50 lakh, ex-showroom, pan-India. It is the cheapest electric SUV the brand sells here and, as of this week, also the hardest to buy: the company says it has confirmed more than 1,000 bookings and the order book is full until March 2027.

There is exactly one variant, the GLC 400 4MATIC. Local assembly has begun at Chakan near Pune, making India the second production site for the electric GLC after Bremen in Germany, and the first Mercedes built here on the company's MB.EA-M electric architecture. Deliveries begin around Diwali.

The GLC Electric is not a petrol GLC with a battery dropped in. It sits on a separate platform, is 140mm longer, 23mm wider and 12mm taller than the combustion car, and rides on a wheelbase stretched by 84mm to 2,972mm. Mercedes has kept costs in check by skipping air suspension and rear-wheel steering for India, fitting passive dampers instead.

At Rs 78.50 lakh it sits just Rs 1.5 lakh above the petrol GLC and Rs 50,000 above the diesel, close enough that the powertrain, not the price, becomes the decision. On-road it stretches by state: about Rs 82.84 lakh in Mumbai and Pune, and past Rs 90 lakh in Delhi and Bengaluru. Run both versions through our EMI calculator before you pick a side.

Why It Sold Out Before It Was Priced

Mercedes opened bookings in October, before the price was announced, and more than 1,000 customers put money down on a number they did not know. Managing Director and CEO Santosh Iyer said the company is asking global leadership for more assembly kits to build more cars at Chakan.

At the introductory price those bookings represent an indicative retail value of over Rs 785 crore including taxes, an order book rather than recognised revenue. Officials say EVs could account for 25 to 30 per cent of Mercedes India sales if supply allowed.

What This Means for You

In the Rs 75 lakh to Rs 90 lakh band, the GLC Electric has made the petrol GLC a harder sell on paper. The running cost gap is large, the range claim covers a Mumbai to Pune round trip with margin, and the cabin tech is a generation ahead. The counter-argument is the wait, which is a long time to hold a booking when BMW is expected to bring the iX3 next year.

The first wave of buyers is paying for the badge and the screen, and will get both. The second wave, after March 2027, is the real test, because by then there will be a rival and no queue to hide behind. If you can wait, wait.
