Nitin Gadkari says the 100 per cent bioethanol Toyota Innova Hycross will be launched on 26 November, with running costs claimed to equal Rs 25 to Rs 30 a litre of petrol.
Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari will launch a Toyota Innova Hycross that runs on 100 per cent bioethanol on 26 November, he said this week. The announcement, first made at an event on 2 November and then narrowed to a date, makes Toyota the first manufacturer to put a pure-ethanol passenger vehicle on Indian roads in any volume.
Gadkari said the vehicle's effective running cost would be equivalent to petrol at Rs 25 to Rs 30 a litre, and that nearly 60 per cent of its power comes through the electric side while driving. That detail matters: the car is a strong hybrid, so the engine's job is partly to keep the battery topped up.
| Variant group | Powertrain | Price (ex-showroom) | ARAI mileage |
|---|---|---|---|
| Petrol G Fleet, 7-seat | 2.0-litre petrol, CVT | Rs 18.70 lakh | 16.13 kmpl |
| Petrol GX (O) | 2.0-litre petrol, CVT | Rs 20.84 lakh | 16.13 kmpl |
| Hybrid VX | 2.0-litre strong hybrid, e-CVT | Rs 26.76 lakh | 23.24 kmpl |
| Hybrid ZX (O) | 2.0-litre strong hybrid, e-CVT | Rs 31.84 lakh | 23.24 kmpl |

Toyota has confirmed the date and the fuel, and nothing else. Price, variants, availability and whether the E100 car goes to private buyers or to fleets are all open. Anyone planning to book on 26 November should expect to leave without a price.
The ethanol programme answers two problems at once: a fuel import bill that tracks crude, and a farm economy that needs a buyer for surplus sugarcane and grain. E20, petrol with 20 per cent ethanol, went nationwide in 2025 and did not go quietly, with large numbers of owners reporting lower efficiency. Gadkari's response has been to push further, naming Maruti Suzuki, Tata Motors, Mahindra, Hyundai and Toyota as companies preparing vehicles that can run on up to 100 per cent ethanol.
A flex-fuel car is only as useful as the pump you can reach. India blends ethanol at the refinery, which is why E20 needed no new retail infrastructure. E100 is the opposite: it needs dedicated tanks, dispensers and a retail supply chain, and almost none of that exists yet. Brazil spent decades building that network. India's first E100 vehicle will spend most of its life on petrol unless Toyota and the oil marketing companies announce a fuelling plan alongside the launch.
Do not plan a purchase around 26 November. The interesting car here is the standard Innova Hycross, a strong hybrid returning 23.24 kmpl on the ARAI cycle with seven seats and a five-star Bharat NCAP rating. The E100 version is a policy statement with a number plate, and its running cost claim depends on an ethanol price you cannot yet buy at. Compare it against the MPVs it will be sold beside on our comparison tool, and watch the fuel price page for the day a retail E100 rate appears. Until then, the flex-fuel Innova is a landmark in Indian motoring and a difficult thing to own.
