Tata Punch.ev Becomes the First Electric Car in India to Cross 5,000 Monthly Sales

By AUTOASTRA Editorial · 3 Nov 2026 · Electric

The Tata Punch.ev crossed 5,000 wholesales in October 2026, the first single electric car in India to clear that mark, as Tata's EV volumes rose 75 per cent.

A Small Number With a Large Meaning

Tata Motors has said its Punch.ev crossed 5,000 units in monthly wholesales in October 2026, a threshold no single electric car model in India has cleared before. The company did not disclose an exact figure, but the trend line is not in doubt: 4,430 units in August, 4,702 in September, and now past 5,000. In October last year the same car managed 915 units, which makes this a near four-fold jump in twelve months.

The claim holds up against the obvious challengers. The MG Windsor's best month is 4,741 units, from September 2025, and the Mahindra XEV 9S peaked at 4,636 in September 2026. What makes the milestone interesting is where it sits: a sub-Rs 10 lakh electric micro-SUV, in a market where electric cars were supposed to start at Rs 15 lakh and climb.

The Facelift Did the Work

The inflection point was February 2026, when Tata updated the Punch.ev with a lower entry price of Rs 9.69 lakh and larger 30 kWh and 40 kWh battery options, the biggest of which claims up to 468 km of range. Tata had projected a 30 to 50 per cent volume increase from that update. The actual outcome has been far steeper, and the car is now comfortably ahead of the Nexon EV, the Curvv EV and the Sierra EV inside Tata's own electric line-up.

At company level, Tata's electric sales including exports reached 16,244 units in October, up 75 per cent year on year and equal to roughly 21.5 per cent of its total passenger vehicle volume. That ratio is the clearest sign yet that electrification has moved out of the premium SUV bracket and into the most price-sensitive part of the market.

The Context Is Not Entirely Rosy

Record model-level numbers sit inside a month that was mixed for electric cars overall. Retail registrations of passenger EVs fell about 4 per cent in October to 35,777 units, according to Vahan data, as supply constraints at Tata and a sharp fall at VinFast weighed on deliveries. Penetration slipped to about 7.2 per cent from 8.6 per cent in September. In September, FADA had recorded a record 36,108 electric car retails at roughly 8.5 per cent penetration, helped by festive demand and price competition below Rs 15 lakh.

What This Means for You

The Punch.ev crossing 5,000 tells a buyer something practical: this is now a mainstream product with mainstream volumes, which means better parts availability and a healthier used market in three years than a niche EV would offer. It also means waiting periods, since Tata's management has said bookings tripled since February and supply needs another two to three months to catch up. Compare it against the Windsor and the Nexon EV on the AUTOINDIA comparison tool, and work out running costs on the EV cost calculator before choosing between the 30 kWh and 40 kWh packs.
