Flex-Fuel Innova Hycross Launch This Month, Gadkari Confirms, as E85 Goes on Sale at Rs 82 a Litre

By AUTOASTRA Editorial · 3 Nov 2026 · Policy

Nitin Gadkari will launch the flex-fuel Toyota Innova Hycross this month, India's second ethanol-capable car, with E85 already selling at Rs 82 a litre.

A Second Flex-Fuel Car, and a Deadline That Is Already Here

Union road transport minister Nitin Gadkari said on Monday that he will launch a flex-fuel Toyota Innova Hycross this month, calibrated to run on 100 per cent bioethanol. Speaking at the ENRich 2026 conference in New Delhi, he said he has driven a pilot version on pure ethanol for about eighteen months. The launch would make Toyota the second manufacturer in India to sell a flex-fuel car, after Maruti Suzuki's WagonR Bioflex in June 2026.

The minister named the companies he expects to follow. Tata Motors, Mahindra and Mahindra, Hyundai and Suzuki are all working on cars that can run on 100 per cent ethanol, he said, without giving dates. The policy push has been steady since E20 became the national default in 2025, but consumer response has been muted: Maruti has sold just 20 WagonR Bioflex units since June, per Vahan data, while Hero MotoCorp has moved 8,145 flex-fuel motorcycles since July.

The Price Problem With E85

Fuel supply is the other half of the story. The petroleum ministry has started selling E85, a blend of 85 per cent ethanol and 15 per cent petrol, at Rs 82 a litre at selected Delhi outlets. On the face of it that is a bargain, since E20 retails well above that figure. The catch is energy density: ethanol carries roughly a third less energy per litre than petrol, so a roughly 20 per cent price advantage does not become a 20 per cent saving per kilometre.

The Hycross is a more sensible flex-fuel candidate than a small hatchback, because fleet and institutional buyers care about volume and about the optics of running on farm-derived fuel. Toyota is separately expected to launch the Innova Hycross facelift towards the last week of November, and that car is widely tipped to become India's first flex-fuel strong hybrid, pairing a 2.0-litre petrol engine with an electric motor for a combined output of around 184 hp and a claimed 23.24 kmpl in its current form.

What This Means for You

Nothing changes for a private buyer this month, and that is the honest read. A flex-fuel badge only pays off if E85 is available at your regular pump and cheap enough to beat petrol on cost per kilometre, and neither condition holds at scale today. What the announcement does signal is that the government intends ethanol to be a mainstream fuel rather than a pilot. If you are buying a car now and plan to keep it seven years, treat flex-fuel readiness as a small bonus, and check running costs on the EV and fuel cost calculator and pump prices on the fuel price page.
