Jeep has put its nine-speed automatic into the entry-level Compass Sport for the first time at Rs 21.99 lakh, undercutting the next automatic variant by Rs 3.46 lakh.
Jeep has done the obvious thing that nobody expected it to do this quarter: it has put its nine-speed automatic gearbox into the entry-level Compass Sport trim. The new variant is priced at Rs 21.99 lakh ex-showroom, which makes it the most affordable automatic Compass in India by a wide margin. Until now, a buyer who wanted two pedals in a Compass had to start at the Longitude (O) AT, listed at Rs 25.45 lakh.
That is a Rs 3.46 lakh gap closed in a single variant. Mechanically nothing has changed. The Sport 9AT uses the same 2.0-litre four-cylinder MultiJet II turbo-diesel, displacing 1,956cc and producing 170 hp and 350 Nm of torque, driving the front wheels only. The Frequency Selective Damping suspension that Jeep fits across the range is retained, as are six airbags, electronic stability control, traction control and Auto Hold.
| Variant | Transmission | Price (ex-showroom) |
|---|---|---|
| Sport MT | 6-speed manual | Rs 17.99 lakh |
| Sport 9AT (new) | 9-speed automatic | Rs 21.99 lakh |
| Longitude (O) MT | 6-speed manual | Rs 23.38 lakh |
| Limited (O) MT | 6-speed manual | Rs 24.58 lakh |
| Longitude (O) AT | 9-speed automatic | Rs 25.45 lakh |
| Limited (O) AT | 9-speed automatic | Rs 26.65 lakh |
| Model S (O) MT | 6-speed manual | Rs 26.45 lakh |
| Model S (O) AT | 9-speed automatic | Rs 28.51 lakh |
| Model S (O) 4x4 AT | 9-speed automatic, all-wheel drive | Rs 30.45 lakh |
This is a value play, not a feature play. The Sport 9AT carries the 8.4-inch Uconnect touchscreen with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, which is enough to keep most buyers happy on the connectivity front, but it does not bring the larger screen, the panoramic sunroof or the ADAS hardware that the Model S trims use to justify their prices. Jeep is also offering an optional accessory pack at Rs 29,900, taking the effective price of a fully kitted Sport 9AT to Rs 22,28,900 before registration and insurance.
The Compass is a genuinely well-built SUV that has spent years losing ground on price. Its rivals in the Rs 20 lakh to Rs 25 lakh diesel automatic space have multiplied, and most of them offer a diesel automatic at or below where the Compass starts its manual range. Adding an automatic to the entry trim lets Jeep advertise a two-pedal Compass in the low twenties instead of the mid-twenties, which is where the segment's volume actually sits.
Deliveries begin in the second week of November 2026 at authorised Jeep dealerships and Stellantis brand houses. That timing is deliberate, placing the variant in showrooms while the shifted festive demand is still being converted.
If you were considering a Compass diesel automatic and had mentally parked it as a Rs 26 lakh car, that assumption is now wrong. The Sport 9AT gets you the same engine, the same gearbox and the same suspension as the Longitude (O) AT for Rs 3.46 lakh less, and the things you give up are comfort and convenience items rather than mechanical ones. Compare the two trims side by side on the AUTOINDIA compare tool, run both through the EMI calculator with your own down payment, and check the insurance estimator before you sign, because on a diesel SUV the premium difference between trims is smaller than most buyers expect.
