October 2026 car sales in India hit a record 5.25-5.30 lakh dispatches. Maruti Suzuki posted its best-ever month at 2,12,384 units, with Tata second.
India's carmakers pushed an estimated 5.25 to 5.30 lakh passenger vehicles into dealerships in October 2026, a 13 to 14 percent jump over the same month last year and the highest monthly wholesale figure the market has ever recorded.
The headline belongs to Maruti Suzuki. The company's domestic dispatches rose to 2,12,384 units, up 20.5 percent year on year, and total sales including exports touched 2,76,120 units — its best month since it began selling cars in India. Utility vehicle volumes climbed 26.1 percent to 97,787 units, mini and compact cars added 18.4 percent to reach 1,00,877, and CNG demand grew 40 percent over last year.
| Carmaker | Oct 2026 domestic | Oct 2025 | YoY change |
|---|---|---|---|
| Maruti Suzuki | 2,12,384 | 1,76,318 | +20.5% |
| Tata Motors PV | 73,894 | 61,134 | +20.9% |
| Mahindra | 73,338 | 71,624 | +2.4% |
| Hyundai | 62,799 | 53,792 | +16.7% |
| Kia | 33,462 | 29,556 | +13.2% |
| Toyota | 29,521 | 40,257 | -26.7% |
Tata Motors had the most interesting month underneath the surface. Its domestic volume grew 20.9 percent to 73,894 units, and electric vehicles jumped 74.9 percent to 16,244 units, roughly one in every 4.6 Tata cars sold. Hyundai set its own record at 62,799 domestic units and 82,299 including exports, while Kia grew 13.2 percent.
Mahindra's 2.4 percent growth needs context rather than alarm: it was already running near its production ceiling last October, so a flat month against a high base still left it at 73,338 units. Toyota has no such excuse. A 26.7 percent fall to 29,521 units is the sharpest decline among the large players, in a month when the market grew double digits.
Vahan registration data, which records cars actually registered to buyers, shows 4,98,208 passenger vehicles across 14 manufacturers — up 15.1 percent month on month, but about 14.5 percent below October 2025. On retails, Maruti led with 2,11,444 units and Tata reclaimed second place with 73,002, ahead of Mahindra's 64,248.
That gap between wholesale and retail is normal in a festive month: dealers stock up in one month and deliver in the next. Diwali falls in November this year, unlike 2025 when it landed in October, so a chunk of festive demand is still ahead. Maruti entered November with pending bookings of roughly 2.45 lakh units and only about 12 days of network stock, which is why the company is not treating the wholesale record as a demand signal on its own.
If you are buying in November, the arithmetic is simple: stock is thin at Maruti, waiting periods are stretching on popular variants, and Hyundai has already flagged that its January 2027 price increase could be pulled forward. Waiting for a year-end discount is a reasonable strategy on slow-moving models, but on the models driving this record, the risk is a longer wait and a higher invoice.
