India registered 4,70,331 passenger vehicles in October 2026, down 20.2% year on year as Diwali moved to November. Maruti Suzuki held 41.57% share.
India's passenger vehicle market registered 4,70,331 units in October 2026, down 20.2 per cent year on year and up 7.1 per cent over September. The figure covers 4,35,782 privately registered cars and utility vehicles plus 34,549 taxis and cabs, and comes from the Vahan 4 dashboard of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways.
The year-on-year collapse looks alarming until the calendar is laid on top of it. Diwali fell in October in 2025 and lands in November this year, so the single biggest buying fortnight of the Indian car year has moved out of the month being measured. Brokerage Jefferies made the same point on 30 October, reporting that passenger vehicle registrations were down 20 to 25 per cent year on year in the first 27 days of October while truck registrations rose 34 per cent over the identical stretch.

Maruti Suzuki ended October with 1,95,512 registrations, which is 41.57 per cent of every passenger vehicle registered in the country. Its cushion over second-placed Hyundai grew to 1,40,897 units from 1,20,931 in September, meaning the market leader extended its lead in a month when the market itself contracted. That comes almost entirely from breadth: a hatchback line-up no rival can match, a utility range that runs from the sub-four metre segment to the Invicto, and a dealer network that reaches districts most brands ignore.
The more interesting number sits seventh on the table. Tata Motors EV registrations rose 64.0 per cent year on year to 13,497 units and Mahindra Electric Automobile grew 89.4 per cent to 7,664. Both had a low base, but the direction is unmistakable: electric cars are the fastest growing slice of an otherwise flat market, while Hyundai has given up 0.95 percentage points of share across 2026.
Two things decide whether October's decline becomes a trend or a footnote. The first is the wholesale numbers manufacturers file with SIAM, which will show whether factories were still pushing stock into dealerships ahead of Diwali. Maruti Suzuki was reported to be on course to cross 2,50,000 total wholesales, with pending bookings climbing from about 2,00,000 at the start of the month to 2,70,000 after Dussehra.
The second is inventory. Dealers were carrying 43 to 45 days of stock at the end of September against 60 days a year earlier, so dispatches can keep flowing without a discount war. If November absorbs the shifted demand, October will be remembered as a scheduling artefact rather than a slowdown.
Do not read the 20 per cent drop as weakness you can exploit. Dealers carry less stock than a year ago, the festive backlog is still clearing, and the best discount window of 2026 has passed for several models. Check the AUTOINDIA sales data before you negotiate and use the on-road price calculator so a headline discount is not eaten by insurance and registration.
